What are Evidence-Based Order Sets?

  • A collection of orders that relate to a specific diagnosis or treatment
  • Order sets were created using evidence-based tools and guidelines where available

Where did the EBOS’s originate?

  • HCA facilitated the creation of more than 400 order set templates using a third-party
evidence-based order set resource called Zynx Health (http://www.zynxhealth.com)

Have MHS physicians had a chance to review the order sets and provide comments?

  • All physicians have been invited to review the order sets through open Service Line review meetings.
  • Full details on the order set review process are available at (http://www.mhsordersets.com)

Have the order sets been modified based on MHS physician comments?

  • Modifications of the order sets have been made based on MHS physician feedback provided online and in the Service Line review meetings.
  • In addition, many physicians across HCA-affiliated hospitals have previously reviewed and commented on the EBOS.
  • As order sets are put into use, the MHS EBOS team will continue to provide a process for concurrent feedback and improvement of order sets based on physician input.

Can the order sets be modified in the future?

  • Yes. MHS will communicate a process for ongoing order set improvements.
  • All order sets will be reviewed at least annually or more often as needed. Local changes are possible as required for safety and physician efficiency.
  • MHS will continuously work with physicians to improve the order sets and review process.

Can MHS make new order sets?

  • Yes, MHS can make new order sets to meet the needs of our physicians.
  • New order sets can be created for processes that don't have a corresponding order
    set in the current library.
  • The timeline and process for the development of new electronic order sets will be published after the CPOE Hard Go-Live is complete and initial order sets have been well established.

Will MHS support the creation of individual provider electronic order sets?

  • MHS is building universal order sets that can be used by multiple providers. New order sets will be built based on consensus of the physicians in that specialty.
  • MHS is committed to working with physician groups to ensure we meet patient care needs.

Can providers build and save their own order sets?

  • Providers can select and mark EBOS as their favorite sets and access them for future use. Providers cannot build and save personal order sets.

Can providers tailor their order sets to personal preferences?

  • MHS order sets cannot be modified by individual users. Providers can save preconfigured single orders into their favorite orders folder and select them for use within or without an order set.

Is using EBOS mandatory?

  • Use of EBOS is highly encouraged, but not mandatory. MHS staff will be contacting providers to encourage use.
  • Summer 2012 will be the best time to learn, as we have a large number of trainers available to support providers.

Will existing paper order sets be available?

  • Paper order sets will continue to be available as we transition to the electronic health care record.

Is the Meditech “Library” of documents (order sets, patient instructions, etc.) going away?

  • MHS is exploring other technical options for document storage, as the Meditech library functionality is difficult to use and maintain.
  • As the MHS library of EBOS is developed, we will transition away from supporting individual physician order sets if a comparable MHS order set is available.
